Many people believe that we have a pre-defined destiny and that we are here to play a pre-written script. Others believe that we create our destiny with the decisions we make everyday and that the future is full of possibilities for us. Are we bound to a Destiny or do we create our own reality with our own actions, thoughts, behaviours and decisions? This is what Expanding Circles discussed when we asked ourselves these questions.
Despite our advance on science and technology, trying to answer this question in a conclusive, definitive and absolute manner continues to be a mystery for many. Researchers and specialists have been unable to find a ‘gay gene’ or a particular variable that exclusively determines the sexual orientation of an individual. There are number of theories and hypotheses and that is why Expanding Circles wanted to host a debate about the different views people have on the topic an attempt to answer the question of if gays are born or made.
Can we making the shift between a 9-5 job we don’t like to earning a living doing what we love? How can the transition be made? Do we have to endure hardship before we can enjoy happiness? The book and film ‘The Secret‘ popularised the concept of the ‘Law of Attraction’; thousands and thousands of people strongly believe that “like attracts like” and that by focusing on positive or negative thoughts, one can bring about positive or negative results to one’s life; but is it truth? or is it just another self-help fad or trend? Our First Expanding Circle in Berlin was about discussing ‘Purpose’. What does it mean to us? How do we find it? What’s the difference with destiny, flow, meaning and career? Here is a summary of what Berlin’s expanders had to say.
Attempting to answer the question of if there is life after death would mean being able to find an explanation to the phenomena. This was our attempt at Expanding Circles. We discuss reincarnation, heaven/hell, quatum physics, multiverse, near-death experiences, consciousness and more.
We’ve all heard “if we do what we love, the money will follow”, but despite the wise advice, many people put their passions aside in order to pursue a conventional career that ‘pays the bills’. Why do we do this? Do we not know how to earn a living doing what we love, or is it that we don’t believe is possible? Read some of the answer to the questions that participants of Expanding Circles came up with during their conversation on 25 February 2014 in London.
Do we have an epiphany moment when we finally find it and after which our lives make sense and become more fulfilling? Or is it something that has been with us all the way along and we just need to connect with it? What is the difference between purpose and our occupation, duties and responsibilities? Is our purpose something that we do or is it an emotion we experience? Can we have a purpose in life that has nothing to do with what we do for a living? If yes, do we experience more fulfilment and contentment when these two are aligned or can they be two independent variables? Here’s what Expanding Circles debate on 11th February 2014
